Actress Maureen McCormick speaks out for poor children around the world! McCormick, a Children International sponsor who played “Marcia Brady” in the 1970’s television program “The Brady Bunch,” kicks-off a national television campaign to end poverty in Zambia and around the world.
McCormick has seen the slums in Lusaka first-hand, and sponsors 14-year-old Mary through Children International. Mary’s parents died three years ago from AIDS, leaving her to raise her four younger brothers and sister. She works odd jobs to put food on the table, while her 7-year-old sister, Manase, cares for their youngest brother, 6-year-old Lovemore.
“Can you imagine a 7-year-old girl that has to be a mother to her little brother? That’s beyond my comprehension,” said McCormick. Even though McCormick has witnessed the deplorable poverty children in Zambia endure every day, she has hope for their future. She sees the opportunity that one-to-one sponsorship affords a child…a chance for a brighter future. “I was hoping that my world would change. My vision, my eyes would see things differently. I definitely think that since I have been there, that’s happening,” said McCormick.
James R. Cook, president and CEO of Children International says, “We appreciate Maureen McCormick helping us raise awareness about the plight of poor children around the world. She has witnessed how one person can change the world for one poor child through Children International.” To learn more about sponsoring a child, visit www.children.org.

Children International Wins Award for Social Networking
The charity received the Innovator Award from Convio, an internet marketing company, provider, forits Lift One Project – a social networking tool – to help reach its goal of providing sponsorship assistance to 400,000 children by the year 2011.
Steven Forsey from North Tonawanda, New York, recently won a contest using this social networking tool. Forsey said, “Children International has ignited a firestorm of interest and captured people’s true inherent passions for giving and selfless service. Children International is enlisting sponsorship activism at home, in our neighborhoods, at our workplaces, and in and around our communities, essentially taking sponsorship back to the places where it starts.”
Over 4,000 people have signed up to use Lift One since its launch in November 2007, and are helping lift poor children from poverty around the world as a result of their online campaigns.
Children International President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Cook says, “We are very grateful for winning this award, but more proud of helping children who live in poverty. Using the internet is an economical way to broaden our family of sponsors who want to help poor children.”
