This billion dollar experience takes you behind the scenes to learn how currency is made. Coin collectors will enjoy browsing the 450-piece collection of coins minted under each U.S. President on loan from the Harry S. Truman Library. The Money Museum’s exhibits are a great family trip that shows kids the real-world effects of money on the economy.

For tour groups, students, and home-schooler’s, Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City offers in-depth programs that are educational and entertaining. One of our favorite place to visit is the City Market in Kansas City. This is also a perfect stop to see money in action after visiting the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. Did you know this is one of the largest public farmers’ markets in the Midwest? The best part is that the City Market is open year-round and has over 30 full-time merchants. This is a great place to go for lunch or to pick up fresh produce as well specialty foods, fresh meats and seafood. There are a number of restaurants and cafes, as well as shopping options, but the fun doesn’t stop there. The City Market also host many events from April through December.

Visiting the City Market is a chance to meet local farmers and learn their stories. And, it is an chance to understand more about the food we consume. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, you might be surprised what you’ll learn. One of the question on my mind was how to pick a good tomato. I learned that I should look for those that are smooth, plump and heavy for their size. While they should be firm, they should also yield to gentle pressure. What I did not realize is that for the best tomato flavor we should not store our tomatoes in the refrigerator. Instead, they should be ripened with the stems up at room temperature. And, if you place a tomato in a paper bag with a apple it will ripen quicker. Go figure?

Among the upcoming events at the City Market are Wellness Wednesdays that are held from 10 am-2 pm through Early October, the City Market Cinema, featuring the Little Shop Of Horrors at the end of July, and the Corn Festival is scheduled for the First of August.
